The exquisite lagoon island of Aitutaki, 45 minutes flight to the north of Rarotonga, offers a handful of places to stay, from the most luxurious Cook Islands resort to simple budget beach bungalows and backpacker lodges. The beaches on the main island of Aitutaki are nothing special, although the north east coast does have some lovely spots. However, on the island motu's surrounding Aitutaki Lagoon you'll find some of the best beaches in the South Pacific as well as excellent snorkelling. A small retreat is being planned for one of the motu but as yet there is no accommodation on these surrounding islands (except on Akitua which is adjoined to Aitutaki by a land bridge).
