Poetry of the Sea in Playa Xcalacoco
|
Ikal del Mar is a secluded refuge carved from the primitive Mayan
jungle near the small village of Xcalacoco. To ensure that the resort will blend
seamlessly with this undeveloped territory. Twenty-nine villas, each with a private pool,
have been carefully constructed from natural wood and stones indigenous to the region.
In keeping with its serene setting, the resort will allow no
motorized vehicles on the property. At night, artificial lighting will not dim star-filled
skies. Torches, adding to the tranquil ambience of this unique retreat, will light the
grounds instead.
The jungle was here before us and we believe that we are intruding
upon it. For this reason, paths and walkways carefully meander avoiding older growths.
Younger trees are allowed to grow within the paths, further reinforcing our philosophy.

Each room will feature a different poet, such as
Neruda, Dario and Alberti. Combining the magical and alluring experience of the Rivera
Maya and the supreme service and relaxing ambiance of the resort, guests will walk away
hypnotized and rejuvenated, feeling as though they had just stepped back in time |
We would like to introduce you to one of the
most unique and exclusive hotel and resort to come our way in a long time, Ikal del Mar
which in Mayan means "Poetry of the Sea".

At Ikal del Mar, 40 miles south of Cancún (From the Cancun International
Airport, drive south on the Cancun-Tulum Highway 40 miles. After passing "Tres
Rios" Eco Park, turn left onto Xcalacoco Road. Drive 1.5 miles and you will find it),
30 thatch-roofed, palapa-style villas are spread out in clusters amid an old-growth forest
fronting eight miles of white sand beach and the Caribbean Sea. Outside, each villa has a
private terrace with a plunge pool, a hammock, a teak daybed, and an outdoor shower
shielded from the elements by a thick woven roof. Inside, mosquito netting surrounds an
oversize bed, and bathrooms have double sinks and marble shower stalls. At the center of
the resort is a circular spa with separate his and hers zones offering facials, massages,
and body wraps enhanced by traditional Mayan ingredients. Close to the beach are a
temazcal, or ancient Mayan-style sauna; a large, lagoonlike swimming pool; and an open-air
yoga and tai chi studio. In Ikal's formal restaurant, chef Noe Islas Osegugra presents a
seafood-centric "Mexi-terranean" menu. Ikal del Mar's developers worked with
Mexico's environmental agency to ensure eco-friendliness, and touches like a ban on motor
vehicles help lessen the human impact on this delicate environment. However, a day lazing
on the beach might just be the most advisable low-impact activity
